A different Mono Black

2005年3月21日
Since everyone else seems to be all about the rats, I thought I would share a list that has been very successful from the other side of the spectrum.

4 Solemn Simulacrum
1 Myojin of Night’s Reach
2 Sundering Titan
1 Darksteel Colossus

4 Wayfarer’s Bauble
4 Night’s Whisper
4 Genju of the Fens
4 Consume Spirit
4 Extraplanar Lens
4 Barter in Blood
3 Mind Sludge
1 Sensei’s Diving Top

24 Swamp

Sideboard:
3 Boseiju
4 Cranial Extraction
2 Night of Soul’s Betrayal
1 Death Cloud
1 Lose Hope
2 Horobi, Death’s Wail
2 Persecute

This deck has a lot of game vs. the top decks. Vs. Mono Green(Beacon Type) it relies on Bauble/Solemn acceleration into the Fatties or, hopefully, a Night of Soul’s Betrayal. It has plenty of huge spells and creatures to help keep the board clear, and once the godzilla hits, there aren’t many threats left in the green player’s deck. Then it just waits to draw more fatties for the kill. Post board it can draw into Night of Souls Betrayal for the white weenies, as well as going up to Boseiju it can proactively attempt to disrupt them via persecute and an accelerated death cloud, but these doesn’t really fear a tooth and nail deck. Yes, tooth for colossus and kiki is painful, but it doesn’t wreck him the way kiki/titan wrecks G/x players, or the way Abunas/Angel wrecks aggro deck players. Post board, it brings in extraction for more disruption and an extra cloud incase it (or some other mean fatty) resolves. Vs. green/x decks, the key is to take off their hand off so that they don’t play Gifts Ungiven,Viridian Shaman,Equipments,TrollAscetic, and other spell that keeps my way into oppoments’ bodies. Its surprising how dependant people are on them, keeping marginal hands only to have them shredded and rendered unplayable by his removal. Night of Soul’s betrayal is at its best vs. the G/U decks that rely on meloku and rude to win games, while Barter is strong vs. the G/R fatty decks.

But I’m rambling. The point is, while the deck doesn’t win fast or pretty, it does consistently prevent the opponent from winning, giving you a chance to draw into one or more fatties to finish them off.

Obviously, mono-blue control is an absolute nightmare matchup, and I would appreciate any suggestions that can reasonably be fit into this framework. The problem, as I see it, is that you can’t win once shackles and magpies are on the table. Genju and Boseiju does’t seem to be enough.Any creative ways to deal with Blue and B/G decks?

Much appreciated,

Mariku
